Suggestions for ASAL supported postgraduate events in 2006/2007

1. ASAL Conference 2007

  • Continuing to offer financial assistance for postgraduates attending the conference

  • A postgraduate social event (drinks, BBQ) during the conference program

2. Research Career Development Events

ASAL is in a strong position to nurture emerging researchers working in the field of Australian literary studies, ensuring that this niche research focus is not only maintained but enhanced and invigorated. Below is a suggested program of annual events that, in conjunction with existing programs, will help build the skills of emerging researchers, contribute to ASAL’s national profile and encourage new memberships.

Career Development Seminar : a 1 day research seminar on career issues relevant to the study of Australian literature and not offered in other contexts.

  • Scope: 20-30 participants; open to all ASAL members (encourage new members!); entry by simple application form

  • Suggested topics: publishing in Aust. Lit.; international avenues for Aust. Lit. teaching and research (such as the Menzies Centre, London, American Association for Aust Lit); information on relevant library collections

  • Budget: approx. $1000 (venue, catering and keynote speaker/s. Participants fund their own travel).

Advanced Training Seminar : a 2 day intensive, advanced training workshop, perhaps held in conjunction with a research centre (such as the Humanities Research Centre, ANU) or National Library, depending on the area of focus.

  • Scope: 5-8 participants; open to all ASAL members; competitive entry by application form (CV, research area, relevance of topic to research).

  • Suggested topics: working with the modern archive; interdisciplinary methodologies in an Australian context (such as literature and history); bibliography.

  • Budget: approx. $1700 (venue, catering, keynote speaker/s, materials, contribution towards participant’s accommodation or travel).

  • Sponsorship/in-kind support (eg: accommodation, venue) could be pursued to cover some of the workshop costs.
